Uncle Tony

My Uncle Tony passed away a couple of weeks ago from natural causes. He was a WWII veteran, a sailor who saw some combat. He was never in trouble, raised a family, worked hard and paid his taxes.

He is the oldest brother of my father(raised in a family of 10). Unfortunately, due to circumstance and geography, I did not know him as well as I should have or as I would have liked to.

When my dad sent a condolence card and a check to his widow, she replied that Uncle Tony only wanted to be remembered by a toast whenever his relatives were in their favorite bar. Here's to you, Uncle Tony and all your bretheren who served -

I had an uncle Joe who was a legitimate ww2 hero. He was decorated multiple times for bravery in Europe, and had 2 Purple Hearts. I remember the scars on his back, and a lump on his forhead where he carried a piece of shrapnel his whole life. Joe Shy was his street name, he was the toughest guy in a tough town called Woonsocket R.I. He owned a bar, and I remember going down from Mass. when where I grew up to have a drink at Uncle Joe's place ( pretty much a dive shot and beer joint). He had a stroke, and died in the 80's in a VA hospital. I remember playing with his medals a few times as a kid. While he lived a hard, tough life, he will always be remebered as a hero by those who knew him.
